Types of light switches: functions and possibilities

Types of light switches: functions and possibilities

You choose how much contact your switch needs.

Today, lighting means much more than simply switching it on and off at the wall. With smart technology, you can turn on the lights with a tap of your finger or a voice command, no matter where you are. With the right system and the right app, you can create lighting moods throughout your home that enhance comfort, wellbeing, and security.

Pushbutton, push switch, or classic switch?

Visually, pushbuttons and switches look almost identical – the difference lies in how they work. When you press a classic switch, the light stays on until you press the switch back to the other side.

A pushbutton, however, only allows the current to flow while it is being pressed. As soon as you release it, the rocker returns to its original position. For this reason, pushbuttons are often used for light signals, doorbells, or door openers.

Push switches combine the advantages of both types. After a brief press, the light remains on, but the button springs back into its starting position when released. The difference compared to a classic switch is that the rocker of a push switch always stays in the same position, regardless of whether the light is on or off.

The on/off switch: the archetype of all light switches

The classic on/off switch is the original form of a light switch. It offers straightforward operation and reliably controls lighting in hallways, living rooms, bedrooms, garages, carports, hobby and utility rooms, as well as outdoor lighting on terraces and garden paths.

As an example of a Gira on/off switch, you can see the Gira E2 design line here. Whether in black matt, pure white matt, or grey matt, this design classic stands out with its clear, reduced lines and timeless aesthetic. It is ideal for anyone who values high-quality design alongside functionality.

Two-gang switch: split rocker for dual lighting

A two-gang switch allows you to control two lights from one location. This dual switch features two separate rockers, so each light can be switched on or off independently.

This is a practical solution for any room with at least two lighting groups. In the kitchen, for example, you can use one rocker for the ceiling light and the other for the under-cabinet lighting.

Two-way switch: a practical option for hallways and living spaces

A two-way switch is another common switch type. It works much like a standard on/off switch, but with one key difference: it allows you to control a single light from two different locations. This means you have two switches for one light, positioned in different spots.

Double two-way switches (also called two-way/two-way switches) feature a dual rocker and use two separate circuits, allowing two two-way switches to be installed neatly in a single flush-mounted box.

This switch type is ideal when you want to operate the lighting conveniently from both the ground floor and the first floor, or in a bedroom where you would like to switch the ceiling light on or off both at the door and beside the bed.

Intermediate switch: flexibility and comfort for your home

An intermediate switch allows you to control a single light source from three or more different locations. It works in combination with at least two two-way switches, enabling flexible and convenient lighting control. This is especially useful in rooms with multiple access points or in large hallways where it is practical to operate the lighting from various positions.

The design example shown here is the Gira Esprit design line. It adds distinctive accents to your home with high-quality materials such as glass, aluminium, or linoleum-multiplex.

Dimmer switches: adjustable brightness for your needs

Switch models today offer far more than simple on/off control. Dimmer switches, which allow you to adjust light levels using a rotary knob, are now widely used in living spaces. Touch surfaces go a step further: the Gira System 3000 touch top unit combines classic switching with dimming functions. With a gentle tap, you can switch the light on or off and fine-tune the brightness.

The design example shown here is the Gira E2 switch range. Whether in black matt, pure white matt, or grey matt, this design classic impresses with its clean, linear form and timeless look.

Indicator switches, pushbuttons and more: switch types with special additional functions

Alongside classic switch types, there are also models with specific additional functions that can be equipped with integrated lighting elements. These intermediate and two-way switches are often used in the hallways of apartment buildings and in public spaces. With a built-in light element on the switch surface, they function as indicator switches. The small LED provides orientation in the dark so you can locate the switch more easily, but it can also indicate – for example outside bathrooms or toilets – whether a room is occupied.

The design example shown here is the Gira Studio switch range.

Automatic switches: sensors that bring movement into lighting control

Automatic switches, such as motion and presence detectors, offer a practical and highly energy-efficient solution. They activate the lighting at a defined time or brightness level only when the sensors detect movement, and switch it off again after a set period.

They are used both outdoors – for example to illuminate driveways or courtyards automatically when you arrive – and indoors in areas where people typically spend only a short amount of time, such as hallways, basements, or garages.

The design example shown here is the Gira Esprit design line in linoleum-multiplex anthracite. This design line highlights your interiors with high-quality materials such as glass, aluminium, and linoleum-multiplex.

Control at your fingertips

Smart switch types for enhanced living comfort

Unlike conventional switches, smart switches with KNX technology allow you to do far more than control lighting. Depending on the configuration, they can also cover the following functions:

  • Switching and dimming

  • Activating scenes

  • Temperature measurement (via integrated temperature sensor)

  • Humidity measurement (via integrated humidity sensor)

  • Blind control

  • Heating control

From push switch to touch panel: lighting at your fingertips

Control elements such as touch panels are increasingly taking over the functions of classic switches. This does, however, require additional technology such as a KNX system running in the background. With the Gira G1 (shown here) and the Smart Home app for Gira One and KNX, you can not only control your entire home but also configure the system to suit your preferences.

The basis of the system is a dedicated cable installation and the Gira X1 server. Both are added during new-build projects or renovation work, alongside conventional electrical infrastructure. In addition to the wired KNX system, the Gira KNX RF system offers a wireless alternative, which is particularly suitable for retrofits.
