Single-family home in the New Forest, Hampshire, UK

Thornby is a traditional brick house with parkland.

Intelligent renovation

The owners commissioned specialist Oliver Dunford of Dunford Construction in Lymington for the modernisation. System Integrator Nigel Murkitt from Aura Digital Living, Southampton, recommended a future-proof KNX system with a powerful Gira HomeServer. This is where all the information is collated and evaluated, and the logical commands are issued to actuators. New functions and devices can be integrated and reprogrammed at any time. Nigel Murkitt and his team linked all the building technology components with the KNX system: Heating, lighting, awnings and window contacts. "By precisely controlling the heating we are able to save energy throughout the entire house", says Murkitt.

The interior design of the two-storey, luxurious building is elegantly and harmoniously coordinated. Sally Stephenson from OWL lighting in Winchester was hired for the high-end lighting. Gira Esprit with frames made from various real materials was chosen for the switch range. The clear form of this switch range is characterised by precise lines. On the ground floor, guests are welcomed in a large reception hall before making themselves comfortable in the elegant drawing room. An open fireplace provides a cosy, warm atmosphere, which no English family would be without. The wood also crackles in an open fireplace in the sitting room. The kitchen and dining room are also located on the ground floor. Five bedrooms and two bathrooms are located on the upper floor. The owners can enjoy views of their own grounds throughout the entire house.

The spacious garden features a conservatory, in which the family feels connected with nature. A swimming pool rounds off the comfort in the grounds. Heating and filtering of the pool, as well as automatic garden sprinklers, are also controlled via KNX. The family attaches a lot of importance to a well-kept garden, and precise control even allows them to save energy. The KNX system offers an additional benefit, in that the owners can easily regulate and control their house in London from Thornby. All that is needed is a Gira HomeServer app.
