Light and clear: Scandinavian-style interiors

Light wood, soft colours, clear shapes: With this interior style, you can add a touch of Scandinavian warmth and cosiness to your home.

In Scandinavian countries, it is often dark for as much as 17 hours of the day during winter. So it's little wonder that Scandinavians like to style their homes with light woods such as birch, ash and pine, soft colours and streamlined shapes. However, the Scandi style is characterised primarily by the creations of design icons from the 50s and 60s, such as Arne Jacobsen and Alvar Aalto.

Scandinavian living: Clear, streamlined, practical.

In 1950, Jacobsen designed the Series 7 – which has since become the world's best-selling chair. With this and his other designs, Jacobsen made a significant impact on Scandinavian design history. Today, his designs have become well-known classics, and can be found in public buildings and private homes around the world. Inspired by icons like Jacobsen, there are a number of very talented young designers building on this design legacy and ensuring that Scandinavian style continues to grow in popularity, including famous design brands like Hay, Normann Copenhagen, Muuto, BoConcept and Design House Stockholm. All of these designers work in pursuit of the same vision: to create design that is "as simple and as functional as possible". Scandinavian design is streamlined and clear and yet still homely. Soft fabrics, patterns and prints are just as crucial to this style as the functionality of the furniture.
