Heating, cooling – electrothermic servos efficiently controlled via KNX

Modern heating systems with convectors, radiators and underfloor heating, but also climate-controlled floors as well as heating and cooling ceilings are controlled via electrothermic servos. The Gira KNX heating actuator basic, 6-gang, is designed to integrate these servos into the building control via KNX. It controls the servos depending on KNX telegrams. Each of the 6 channels can be used to control up to two 24 V AC servos or up to four 230 V AC servos through switching. There is a wide range of applications: The actuator is suitable for residences as well as for commercial properties such as office buildings, schools and hotels. The hardware and software of the Gira KNX heating actuator basic, 6-gang concentrates on the essential functions, making it particularly economical and reliable. It features practical functions such as programmable valve rinsing cycles for anti-jamming protection or the control of heating circuit pumps. The DRA format device is installed on a DIN top-hat rail.

Controlling electrothermic servos

The Gira KNX heating actuator basic, 6-gang, controls servos with the characteristic 'de-energised open' or 'de-energised closed'. It is suitable for servos with 24 V AC or 230 V AC. Up to four 230 V AC or two 24 V AC servos can be connected for each channel.

Overload protected and short-circuit protected

To protect the device and the connected servos, the Gira KNX heating actuator basic, 6-gang, identifies overloads or short circuits and switches the affected outputs off. Non-overloaded outputs continue to function ensuring that the affected rooms will continue to be heated. Valve voltage failure, overload and short circuit can be signalled on the bus for each output.

Protection against jammed valves

Cyclical rinsing processes can be programmed to prevent valves from seizing up. The interval between rinsing cycles is shown in weeks. Valve rinsing is carried out both for de-energised closed thermal servos and for de-energised open thermal servos.

Application example

Under typical operation for controlling a heating system, the Gira KNX heating actuator basic, 6-gang, switches servos when the temperature has reached a pre-defined setpoint or deviates from this setpoint. The temperature controller of the Gira touch sensor 3 Plus (for example) determines the setpoints and actual values, and then signals to the actuator via KNX telegram to open or close the servos. The actuator's software now includes even more functions that make running heating systems more efficient, helping to save on heating costs. In addition, it is possible to control circulation pumps for the various heating circuits.

Start-up via ETS

Start-up takes place via ETS with active KNX BUS.

Installation

Installation on top-hat rail according to DIN EN 60715. Valves with the same operating voltage must be connected at all outputs. VDE approval in accordance with EN 60669-1, EN 60669-2-1, EN 50428.

This device is a product of the KNX system and complies with the KNX guidelines. Detailed specialist knowledge acquired in KNX training courses is assumed for understanding. The functionality of the device is dependent upon software. Detailed information regarding software versions and their range of functions as well as the software itself can be found in the manufacturer's product database. KNX-certified software is used for the planning, installation and start-up of the device.
