AW Architect of the Year 2025: Jeanne Gang - new exhibition opening in Berlin

AW Architect of the Year 2025: Jeanne Gang - new exhibition opening in Berlin

Architecture that connects rather than divides: Jeanne Gang has been named the 2025 Architect of the Year by AW Architektur & Wohnen magazine.

This year, in Jeanne Gang, AW Architektur & Wohnen is once again honouring an architect who opens up new perspectives on building with her attitude, precision and creative vision. The American architect is one of the most influential voices of a style of architecture that seeks not to divide, but to unite.

Gira has been committed to increasing the visibility of architectural quality and creative attitudes for many years. Our collaboration with AW Architektur & Wohnen is testament to this claim. We would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Jeanne Gang on her award.

The accompanying exhibition entitled "The Art of Architectural Grafting", is on display at the Aedes Architekturforum in Berlin until 27 August 2025.

Jeanne Gang: Architecture in dialogue with existing structures

Transformation is at the heart of Jeanne Gang's work. Rather than replacing existing buildings and urban structures, she upcycles them. With her architecture firm, Studio Gang, she designs projects that respond to the respective location, open up new uses and strengthen social encounters.

Whether it be an educational building, museum or public space, every project starts with an examination of its surroundings and combines social, functional and ecological aspects. Jeanne Gang views architecture as a contribution to public life. Her approach is research-based, precise and human-oriented.

Exhibition in Berlin: "The Art of Architectural Grafting"

Until 27 August at the Aedes Architekturforum → To the exhibition

As part of this year's award, Jeanne Gang's exhibition, "The Art of Architectural Grafting", opened at the Aedes Architekturforum in Berlin on 11 July 2025. It will remain open until 27 August and provides an insight into the attitude and working methods of Studio Gang.

The exhibition is based on Jeanne Gang's book of the same name, which focuses on upcycling existing building stock. It uses six projects to show how existing structures can be developed – with a view to meeting new requirements, changing contexts and societal needs.

The exhibition includes models, drawings, photographs, videos and images of plants. The space was designed by Studio Gang with graphic design by the Zurich-based Studio Elektrosmog.
