Heating, cooling – electrothermic servos intelligently controlled via KNX

The Gira KNX heating actuator, 6-gang, controls heating and cooling cycles. It switches the electrothermic servos on, for example, radiators or underfloor heating manifolds to control the hot water flow. For each channel, up to four 230 V AC servos or up to two 24 V AC servos can be controlled. Depending on the type of device and the programming, this is achieved by a switching correcting variable or by pulse width modulation (PWM). There is a wide range of applications: The actuator is suitable for residences as well as for commercial properties such as office buildings, schools and hotels. The hardware and software of the Gira KNX heating actuator are particularly user-friendly – for an easy and quick start-up. Manual actuation is with the familiar Gira manual actuation concept and start-up is possible without ETS programming. The DRA device is installed on a DIN top-hat rail.

Controlling electrothermic servos

The Gira KNX heating actuator, 6-gang, controls electrothermic servos with the characteristic 'de-energised open' or 'de-energised closed'. It is suitable for servos with 24 V AC or 230 V AC. Up to four 230 V AC or two 24 V AC servos can be connected for each channel.

Transfer of the largest variable and heating demand request

The heating actuator, 6-gang, features heating demand and pump control. The heating actuator transmits the largest variable to a suitable burner control unit. All six available outputs can be optionally taken into account. This makes the heating control even more efficient and adaptable to the respective room conditions.

Overload and short-circuit protection

To protect the device and connected servos, the KNX heating actuator, 6-gang, identifies overloads or short circuits and switches the affected outputs off. The device's LEDs signal the error. Non-overloaded outputs continue to function ensuring that the non-affected rooms will continue to be heated. Valve voltage failure, overload and short circuit can be signalled on the bus for each output.

Intelligent protection against jammed valves

The function for preventing jammed valves by cyclical rinsing processes has been optimised: The parameters allow for the valve rinsing cycle times to be set from 1 to 26 weeks. The intelligent valve rinsing function recognises when a variable limit has not been exceeded for a programmed period of time and triggers a rinsing of the valves. The interval between rinsing cycles is shown in weeks. Valve rinsing is carried out both for de-energised closed thermal servos and for de-energised open thermal servos.

Summer/winter changeover

The KNX heating actuator, 6-gang, features a summer/winter changeover function. If, for example, no heating is required during the summer, the actuator can be set to enter an energy-saving idle state. The correcting variables for the forced position as well as for the emergency mode can be configured differently.

Typical areas of application for the KNX heating actuator, 6-gang, are heating and cooling systems in office buildings, schools, hotels or residential buildings. The heating actuator uses electrothermic servos to control underfloor heating, convectors and radiators as well as climate-controlled floors and heating and cooling ceilings.

Start-up via ­manual actuation

The Gira KNX heating actuator, 6-gang, supports start-up of the heating system without ETS by the building site operation: The outputs can also be operated manually without ETS programming, with operating voltage only. A correcting variable of 50% has been pre-set for this start-up. De-energised closed servos with 'first open function' can be activated by manual actuation, meaning that the basic functions of the hydraulic system work even without a programmed KNX bus.

Start-up takes place via ETS with active KNX BUS.


Installation on top-hat rail according to DIN EN 60715. Valves with the same operating voltage must be connected at all outputs. VDE approval in accordance with EN 60669-1, EN 60669-2-1, EN 50428.

This device is a product of the KNX system and complies with the KNX guidelines. Detailed specialist knowledge acquired in KNX training courses is assumed for understanding. The functionality of the device is dependent upon software. Detailed information regarding software versions and their range of functions as well as the software itself can be found in the manufacturer's product database. KNX-certified software is used for the planning, installation and start-up of the device.
