Bonjour Hong Kong!

Bonjour Hong Kong!

Très français! In the affluent Mid-Levels neighbourhood on Hong Kong Island, interior architects Clement C Studio have designed a maisonette that brings together classical French elegance and Asian urban living in a striking and unusual way.

High above the city

Mid-Levels is located between the central business district of Hong Kong and Victoria Peak. One of the city’s most desirable residential areas, the leafy district combines a calm atmosphere and more temperate climate with easy access to the harbour and the business district. High-rise living is unavoidable here too – but also very much part of the appeal. The view across the harbour and towards Kowloon is a treat at any time of day or year. It was precisely this that attracted the owners of a 370 m2 maisonette high up in one of the area’s skyscrapers. However, as committed Francophiles, they wanted a high-quality interior design concept that stood out from the currently prevalent Asian minimalist style.

Refined opulence

The interior design is luxurious without being ostentatious. It starts at the entrance to the lower, semi-public level of the apartment. A stone floor with an artfully integrated 3D effect makes it clear from the moment you step inside that there is plenty to discover here – but only after you have walked around a finely engraved glass privacy screen. Beyond it unfolds a carefully thought-out sequence of rooms that are not only functional, but staged like works of art. The dining area is framed by a series of ceiling lights and decorative wall features, while the adjoining kitchen is almost stage-like thanks to its dark brown coffered ceiling and strikingly grained marble surfaces. Even the staircase to the private upper floor is a composition in its own right. Its elegant, curved steel balustrade provides a formal counterpoint to the Edra Rose Chair positioned in front of it and an oversized Louis Vuitton trunk repurposed as a piece of furniture.

Classical elegance, contemporary ease

The representative character of the lower floor gives way to a more relaxed sense of comfort in the private rooms upstairs, without compromising on the exceptional quality of the design and furnishings. Here too, light and dark earth tones alternate, while intricately crafted ceilings are paired with fine woods used, for example, to create window seats and cabinetry designed as integral elements of the architecture. Fine parquet flooring and carefully coordinated carpets complement the subtle colour scheme and enhance the elegance of the interior. Behind the scenes, state-of-the-art integrated building technology ensures maximum comfort and precise control of every function. A Gira KNX system, networked via the Gira HomeServer, enables intelligent orchestration of air conditioning, ventilation, lighting and security. Operation is intuitive thanks to premium interface solutions such as the Gira pushbutton sensor 4.55 and the Gira G1 multi-touch display. The concept is complemented by switches and socket outlets from the Gira Esprit design line in white glass, whose clean, timeless design fits seamlessly into the architectural blend of classical and contemporary elements high above Hong Kong.
